Building the Foundation: What is Bittul Chametz?
Our journey begins with understanding the core: What is 'Bittul Chametz'? It's not just reciting a formula. Rather, it's a profound halachic-legal act that changes the status of chametz.
כל חמירא וחמיעא דאיכא ברשותי, דלא חזיתיה ודלא בערתיה ודלא ידענא ליה, לבטיל ולהוי הפקר כעפרא דארעא.
Any chametz or leaven that is in my possession, which I have not seen and have not removed, and about which I am unaware, shall be nullified and become ownerless like the dust of the earth.
The bittul formula itself contains clues to the two main approaches we will learn: 'le-vatel' (nullification/invalidation) and 'le-hevey hefker' (ownerless).
