Building Chazarat Ha-Shatz: Ancient Foundations
Let's build our understanding around one of the central components of public prayer: Chazarat Ha-Shatz. This is the repetition of the Amidah by the prayer leader, recited aloud.

The Gemara clarifies the original purpose: Chazarat Ha-Shatz was instituted specifically for those who were not fluent enough to pray on their own.
This clarification reveals a foundational principle: the entire community must fulfill the mitzvah of prayer. For those unable, the Chazan fulfills it on their behalf.
In the past, many people did not know how to pray by heart. Chazarat Ha-Shatz served as a bridge, allowing everyone to participate fully in public prayer, even if their reading or memorization skills were limited.
