    Building the Opening: Why Three?

    The Amidah prayer, the heart of Jewish prayer, opens with three foundational blessings of praise. These are not merely an introduction, but a precise structure preparing us to stand before the Creator.

    ברכות לד, ב
    תנו רבנן: תפילה צריך שתהא בה שבח והלל, ובקשת צרכים, והודאה. מאי טעמא? דכתיב: 'לשמוע אל הרנה ואל התפלה'. 'רנה' זו שבח, 'תפלה' זו בקשת צרכים.

    Our Rabbis taught: Prayer must contain praise and exaltation, and requests for needs, and thanksgiving. What is the reason? As it is written: 'To hearken unto the song and unto the prayer.' 'Song' refers to praise, 'prayer' refers to requests for needs.

    The Gemara breaks down the structure of prayer into three fundamental parts. The first three blessings are entirely dedicated to 'praise and exaltation,' preparing us for the requests for needs.

    The Transition from Acknowledging the Patriarchs to God's Might

    The 'Avot' blessing opens with connecting to the lineage of Israel, recognizing the eternal covenant with our patriarchs. It establishes the personal and historical bond with the Holy One. From there, we ascend to 'Gevurot'.

    Why did they juxtapose Gevurot with Avot? Because just as the merit of our patriarchs stood before You, so too Your mighty deeds stood by us.

    Kedushah: The Pinnacle of Praise

    After acknowledging our patriarchs and God's mighty deeds, we reach the pinnacle of praise: 'Kedushat Hashem' (Sanctification of the Name). This is a recognition of God's essence, His sublime holiness, elevated beyond all human comprehension.

    The third blessing of the Amidah, emphasizing God's holiness and kingship. During the Chazarat HaShatz (reader's repetition), it is recited communally with calls of 'Kadosh, Kadosh, Kadosh'.

    אמר רבי יוחנן: כל תפילה שאין בה קדושת השם אינה תפילה.

    Rabbi Yochanan said: Any prayer that does not contain the sanctification of God's Name is not a prayer.

    Insight

    The 'Kedushah' during the Chazarat HaShatz, with the angelic calls, is a peak moment of communal elevation. It emphasizes that praise is not only personal, but also a communal expression of God's holiness.

    Why Not Request? The Boundaries of Praise

    The first three blessings are pure praise. It is forbidden to insert personal requests or needs into them. This is the stage of drawing near and recognizing God's greatness, not the stage of demanding.

    If prayer must include both praise and requests, why is it forbidden to make requests in the first three blessings? After all, they are part of the prayer!

    The answer is a matter of order and preparation. Just as one does not enter before a king and immediately make a request, but first praises and acknowledges his greatness, so it is in prayer. There is a time for everything.

    The distinction between praise and request is crucial for understanding the structure of prayer. It teaches us humility and reverence, and prepares us to ask for our needs from a deep awareness of Whom we stand before.
