Building the Foundation: Bedtime Shema
We are building our knowledge of prayer. Today, we will decode the secret behind an ancient custom: reciting Shema before sleep. This is a moment of deep connection, combining spiritual protection with acceptance of the yoke of Heaven.
The Babylonian Talmud in Tractate Berakhot, page 5a, states: Rabbi Yehoshua ben Levi said: Whoever recites Keriat Shema upon his bed, it is as if he holds a double-edged sword in his hand, as it is stated: 'The high praises of God are in their mouth, and a two-edged sword in their hand.'
The Gemara does not command, but strongly recommends. It paints a powerful picture of spiritual protection. This is not merely a custom, but a potent tool.
