    How to read Rashi

    Lesson 7 of 37 18 min

Rashi is the private tutor sitting beside the Gemara. We learn to find the dibbur hamatchil, match it to the Gemara line, and see what it adds.

    Lesson goals
    • 01Identify a dibbur hamatchil and locate it in the Gemara
    • 02Distinguish word translation, context and argument explanation
    • 03Read Rashi after an independent attempt
    01

    The dibbur hamatchil

Each Rashi comment opens with bold words - a short quote from the Gemara. That is the "dibbur hamatchil". Find the same words in the main text and you know exactly which line he is explaining.

    1. 1Read a Gemara passage and try to understand it on your own.
    2. 2Mark a word or step you did not understand.
    3. 3Find the dibbur hamatchil quoting it in the Rashi column.
    4. 4Ask: is Rashi translating, filling in context, or explaining the logic?

    Rashi script

Rashi is printed in a special typeface, "Rashi script". The letters match ordinary Hebrew letters but look different. Practise: after a few pages the eye adjusts. The site reader can also show Rashi in ordinary letters.

    Insight

Do not start with Rashi - arrive at him. The independent attempt is what builds the learner.

    Practice

On Berakhot 2a, find three Rashi headings and match each to its Gemara line.

    Lesson wrap-up

The dibbur hamatchil is an address. Read the address and you arrive.

    Check your understanding

Test yourself before marking the lesson complete.
