    Chapter 1 · Betulah Nisset

Wednesday Weddings and the Court Schedule

    Lesson 1 of 49 25 min

Build the tractate’s foundations from the weekly calendar. The Mishnah connects the wedding day to court availability. The Gemara adds another layer: time to prepare the feast.

    Lesson goals
    • 01Decode the link between a Wednesday wedding and the Thursday court session.
    • 02Explain why court availability alone does not explain the choice of Wednesday.
    • 03Distinguish the reason for the enactment from its consequence for maintenance.

Source and decoding - Ketubot 2a

    Ketubot 2a

A virgin marries on Wednesday, and a widow on Thursday. For courts sit in the towns twice a week, on Monday and Thursday, so that if he had a claim concerning virginity, he would go early to court.

Start with the weekly calendar. A Wednesday wedding allows a husband with a claim concerning virginity to approach the court on Thursday morning. This is a claim to investigate, not a finding that it is true. Yet a Sunday wedding would also allow court access the next day. The Gemara completes the structure: the Sages provided for the welfare of Jewish women by arranging three days of work on the feast, Sunday through Tuesday. This also has a consequence for maintenance when the appointed marriage time falls on Sunday. This lesson focuses on that structure, not the later questions about unavoidable delays.

    Terms to decode

    בשבת
Here: in the week. The courts sit twice weekly, not twice on the Sabbath.
    טענת בתולים
A husband’s claim that he did not find signs of virginity. The Mishnah arranges access to court to investigate it.
    שקדו
The Sages took care to provide for Jewish women: the groom is to spend three days preparing the feast.
    מעלה לה מזונות
Provides her maintenance. Here the issue is the obligation when the appointed marriage time has arrived but the marriage has not taken place.

The sugya's flow - from Mishnah to conclusion

    1. 01·Mishnah / BaraitaKetubot 2a

The Mishnah sets a virgin’s wedding for Wednesday. Courts sit on Monday and Thursday, allowing a claim concerning virginity to reach court the next morning.

    2. 02·The Gemara asks

Initially, Shmuel’s teaching is presented as explaining Wednesday through maintenance: if the appointed time falls on Sunday, must he support her before Wednesday?

    3. 03·Kushya

Rav Yosef challenges the structure of the explanation. Our Mishnah already states its reason. Why make it depend on another Mishnah whose reason is not explicit?

    4. 04·Terutz

The Gemara corrects the report of Shmuel’s teaching. The starting point is the Mishnah’s reason: access to court early the next morning for a claim concerning virginity.

    5. 05·Kushya

If so, why not marry on Sunday? The court also sits the next day, Monday.

    6. 06·Terutz

The Sages provided for the welfare of Jewish women. The groom prepares the feast on Sunday, Monday, and Tuesday, then marries on Wednesday. This layer distinguishes Sunday from Wednesday.

    7. 07·Conclusion of the sugya

In this passage, Wednesday is explained by combining court availability with feast preparation. The consequence now follows: when the appointed time falls on Sunday, he does not provide maintenance for the delay until Wednesday required by the enactment.

    Practice

Draw the sugya’s blueprint. Mark the court days and the three feast-preparation days on a weekly calendar. Explain why Sunday fits the Mishnah’s reason and what the Gemara’s answer adds. Finally, state what the passage says about maintenance when the appointed time falls on Sunday.

    Lesson wrap-up

We built two layers: access to court the next morning and three days to prepare the feast. Together they explain the choice of Wednesday. The maintenance rule discussed here follows from the enactment; it is not the reason for establishing it.
