    Eruvin 13b

For two and a half years they disputed: one said it is better for man not to have been created, the other that it is better to have been created.

For two and a half years they disputed: one said it is better for man not to have been created, the other that it is better to have been created. They voted and concluded: better not to have been created; but now that he was created, let him examine his deeds - some say: let him weigh his deeds. The conclusion is not despair but a call to responsibility.

    Insight

This lesson is a study framework, not a halachic ruling. Check everything in the sources, and bring practical questions to a rabbi.

    Practice

Distinguish "examine" and "weigh": one looks back, one ahead. Write an example of each.

    Lesson wrap-up

The existential question ends in a practical instruction.
