    Sukkah 9a

Beit Shammai invalidate an old sukkah and Beit Hillel validate it.

Beit Shammai invalidate an old sukkah and Beit Hillel validate it. An old sukkah is one made thirty days or more before the festival, not specifically for the festival. But if it was made for the festival, it is valid even if built at the start of the year. The Gemara explains that Beit Shammai learn from "make yourself the festival of Sukkot" that the sukkah must be made for the festival.

    Insight

This lesson is a study framework, not a halachic ruling. Check everything in the sources, and bring practical questions to a rabbi.

    Practice

Compare two sukkot made two months ago, one for the festival and one only for shade. Assuming all other requirements are met, what is their status according to Beit Shammai?

    Lesson wrap-up

The question is not only "when was it built" but "what was it built for".
